Woe is me

“Must be a Woe
A loss or so
To bend the eye
Best Beauty’s way”

-Emily Dickenson

The 19th century woman tends to be romanticized, but in reality the complex and inner workings of her mind is woeful. This somber reality is communicated through the writings of female poets from the time. I have dared to illustrate the intricate emotion and sorrow that these poets communicate through a peculiar juxtaposition of faces and objects. These writers include Emily Bronte, Eliza Cook, Emily Dickenson, Helen Hunt Jackson, and Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
